At the age of 17, in 1943, he decided to join the navy as a secretary writer and was on board several fleet carrier ships that took him to remote parts of the world, like South Africa, Australia and even The Philippines. His letters to his mother showed how much he was enjoying this kind of travels and as his own words “the navy was my university and made me the man I am”
