Shortly before David’s 14th birthday, as the war broke out, he was evacuated to Hatfield, in Hertfordshire. He was host by a nice family where he stayed there for two years. He adapted quickly to his new lifestyle, new friends and a new school. His younger siblings stayed with their grandparents in Cuffley, Hertfordshire. David used to cycle and visit them from time to time and meeting their parents there.
